Police arrested a man accused of firing an improvised gun at another person in Talisay City, Negros Occidental, after authorities responded to an emergency report sent through the Unified 911 System.
The Philippine National Police said the incident happened on July 16 and prompted personnel of the Talisay Component City Police Station to launch hot pursuit and dragnet operations.
The suspect, identified only by the alias “Tyanak,” was described as a 34-year-old pedicab driver and resident of Talisay City.
Investigators said the 48-year-old victim had gone to a tricycle terminal to look for his child’s mobile phone, which was believed to have been left inside a tricycle.
The victim allegedly encountered the suspect at the terminal, where he was threatened before a single shot was fired using an improvised firearm.
The victim escaped unharmed, while the suspect fled the area before police officers tracked him down during the ensuing pursuit.
Authorities said the suspect later admitted throwing the firearm into a nearby river. Search teams had yet to recover the weapon.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez said the arrest showed how immediate public reporting through Unified 911 allowed police to respond quickly, protect communities and prevent suspects from evading accountability.
