Big changes are brewing in the desert.
Following a disappointing season that failed to meet lofty expectations, the Phoenix Suns are reportedly open to reshaping their core—starting with the possible departure of one of the game’s most prolific stars. According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Suns are expected to entertain trade offers for Kevin Durant this offseason and plan to work closely with him and his longtime business partner, Rich Kleiman, to identify a suitable destination.
Durant, who turns 36 later this year, remains one of the most productive and respected players in the NBA. Despite the team’s struggles, he posted impressive numbers during the 2024–25 campaign—averaging 26.6 points, 6 rebounds, and 4.2 assists over 62 games. However, those efforts were not enough to steer Phoenix into playoff contention. The Suns limped to a 36-46 record, failing to find consistent chemistry with their high-powered trio of Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal.
Phoenix’s willingness to consider trading Durant is part of a larger organizational reset. The team has already dismissed head coach Mike Budenholzer after just one season and is reportedly also exploring options to move Beal. However, Beal’s no-trade clause could complicate any potential deal.
Durant’s trade value remains high despite his age and contract situation. He is entering the final year of a four-year, $198 million extension originally signed with the Brooklyn Nets in 2021. Though the Suns nearly traded Durant back to the Golden State Warriors at this season’s trade deadline, the veteran forward ultimately vetoed the move—despite lacking a formal no-trade clause—expressing his desire to finish the year in Phoenix.
That plan fell short as the Suns failed to mount a meaningful second-half run. Now, with another disappointing season in the rearview mirror, the front office appears ready to move on. Still, out of respect for Durant’s legacy and stature in the league, Phoenix is expected to work collaboratively to find the right fit—likely a contending team poised for a championship run.
Interestingly, the Warriors may still be in the picture. Durant recently appeared on Draymond Green’s podcast, downplaying any lingering tension from his previous stint with Golden State. However, their acquisition of Jimmy Butler at the trade deadline may signal a shift in direction, lessening the need for another superstar wing.
Wherever he lands, Durant will almost certainly require a significant trade package, even with just one year left on his deal. He continues to perform at an elite level and could be the final piece for a team on the brink of title contention. As the offseason approaches, all eyes will be on the Suns—and on where Durant’s legendary career heads next.
