Every 40 seconds, someone dies by suicide, according to the Department of Health (DoH), and based on data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), there were 3,315 deaths recorded from intentional self-harm (suicide) in the country in 2025, as compared to 3,379 in 2024.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported nearly 2,000 suicide cases in the first half (January to June) of 2025 alone, linking several cases to physical and online bullying.

Male suicides are estimated at 4.3 to 4.4 per 100,000, while female suicides registered around 1.0 to 2.1 per 100,000. The PSA added that young people aged 15 to 29 continue to experience high and rising rates of suicidal ideation and attempts.

Recognizing the problem, the health department has advised parent and guardians to be wary of behavioral changes among their children or wards.

“Pay attention to sudden changes in mood, behavior, or sleep. Notice when someone starts withdrawing or using substances more often. These may be signs that they are struggling silently,” the DoH advised.
“Check in. Ask how they are doing. Listen without judgment. Your concern could be the lifeline they need. Every conversation can be a chance to save a life,” it added.

In conclusion, the agency urged the public that if anyone notices someone who needs support, contact the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) Crisis Hotline at 1553 or 0919 057 1553.
