Subic holds 15th Recyclables Collection Event

Dear mindful readers,

Just recently, the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) in partnership with the Department of Tourism held the Central Luzon Sustainable Tourism Summit dubbed, “Towards a Carbon Neutral Future: Central Luzon’s Commitment to Sustainable Tourism,” at the Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center, Subic Bay Freeport Zone. The primary goal of the activity was to ensure that by the end of 2040, all economic activities will have net-zero carbon emissions, achieved through reductions and offsets, meaning no additional carbon will be released into the atmosphere.

Part of the overall strategy initiated by the SBMA Ecology Center to achieve this goal was the conduct of the 15th Recyclables Collection Event (RCE) last November 18, 2024 at the Mini golf course, Subic Bay Freeport Zone.

The five-day event was just one of the numerous measures of the agency to jumpstart the Race for Carbon Neutrality project to reduce carbon emissions in the SBFZ by 30 percent by 2030, and eventually to net zero by 2040.

This undertaking not only contributes to the global mission of saving our planet from harmful emissions that cause eventual decay and destruction to our environment, but also improves the brand image of Subic Bay Freeport as a sustainable eco-tourism destination and investment hub. Moreover, this initiative will steer the SBMA to the forefront of the Green Revolution by introducing carbon neutral development strategies into the local economic, industrial, and trade policies of the country.

The event successfully held the Green Wheels Caravan with the Environmental Management Bureau of the DENR, the Refill Revolution, Sustainable Products Exhibit and Demo of Iglota Farmers Association on making recycled straw bags at the Harbor Point Ayala Mall, Promenade B.

Also conducted was the Food Waste Management Orientation at Function Hall B, Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center (SBECC), in partnership with the Hospitality Alliance of Subic Bay and Ante Verde Eco Solutions, Inc.

SBMA OIC Senior Deputy Administrator for Regulatory Group Amethya Dela Llana-Koval cited that the SBMA is pushing for a Carbon Neutral freeport in 2040. She added that the agency aims to adapt a carbon neutral framework; conduct emissions reduction planning; prioritize energy efficiency; utilize electric vehicles within the SBMA for carbon reduction targets; and use emerging technologies.

“The agency also plans to leverage renewable (energy); smart waste management; engage stakeholders; conduct mangrove rehabilitation and restoration program; implement forest conservation program; brainstorm on bamboo forest development for increased oxygen production, higher carbon absorption and tourist attraction; and find financing,” the official also shared.

Achievable? Yes indeed! With all hands on deck and a clear direction and mindset, nothing is impossible!

One earth. One planet. OUR HOME.

Love and light,
