State honors mark Enrile’s burial at Libingan ng mga Bayani

Former Senate president Juan Ponce Enrile was laid to rest on Saturday at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig, where he received full state and military honors. The burial site was sealed at 11:53 a.m.

The interment included traditional rites such as a gun salute and the ceremonial folding and turnover of the Philippine flag to his family. Relatives, former government colleagues and close associates attended the burial.

Enrile’s remains were brought from the Heritage Park in Taguig to the Libingan, where military personnel escorted the funeral convoy and carried out the honors reserved for national leaders and military figures.

His burial proceeded as discussions continued over his eligibility for interment at the national heroes’ cemetery, with some groups earlier questioning the decision due to historical issues linked to his tenure in government.

Enrile, who died at 101, served in several key positions in government, including Justice Secretary, Defense Minister, Senate President and later Chief Presidential Legal Counsel.

Enrile’s burial concluded a career that spanned multiple administrations and major political events in the country.
