LINGAYEN, Pangasinan – The Pangasinan Asinderos Volleyball Team is set to compete in the Rising Stars International Volleyball Cup 2026 in Malaysia from Oct. 14 to 19.
Asinderos coach Romy Vergara, in a press conference on Tuesday, said the team is composed of Pangasinense youth under 18 years old from different localities of the province who were chosen through tryouts and have been trained in-house in Balungao town.
“The Rising Stars International Volleyball Camp is joined by teams from Asia. The tournament is among Asian countries. The purpose is for the young people to play so they would have a chance to be recruited in commercial leagues in Asia,” he said.
Governor Ramon Guico III, in the same press conference, said they are strengthening sports development in the province to give opportunities for homegrown athletes to showcase their skills in the international arena.
“That’s our vision and thrust for the province of Pangasinan. That’s why we say, Pangasinan is great. While we have leagues organized at the barangay level, local government unit level, provincial level, or even district and national level, we always aim to go international,” he said.
Guico said that through the province’s sports program, young people — even those from poor families who have talents and skills — are given opportunities.
“In grassroots development, the real work starts from the grassroots. It starts from our coaches, talking to the families, [about] the potential of their children, and then we bring them to a sports program. We feed them, we train them, we give them the best coaches, we give them their basic needs somehow,” he said. (PNA)
