Classes in all levels, both public and private, are suspended in Sorsogon and Masbate due to the anticipated impact of Severe Tropical Storm Tino (international name: Kalmaegi).
Sorsogon Governor Edwin Hamor said the suspension follows recommendations from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, as Tino is expected to bring moderate to heavy rains that could trigger flooding and landslides.
“It is imperative to ensure the safety and welfare of students, teaching personnel, non-teaching personnel, and the general public amid the potential threats posed by the weather disturbance,” the executive order stated.
Masbate Governor Richard Kho also declared a province-wide class suspension as a precautionary measure. He warned of possible storm surges, flooding in low-lying areas, and landslides in mountainous regions.
“Everyone is strongly advised to stay in safe areas and avoid coastal regions. Be prepared for possible emergencies, and respond immediately to warnings from authorities,” Kho said, adding that the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and other agencies are ready to respond.
According to PAGASA, Tino has intensified while moving west-southwest over the Philippine Sea. Its center was last located 430 km east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar, with maximum sustained winds of 110 kph and gusts reaching 135 kph.
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 is hoisted over Sorsogon, Masbate (including Ticao and Burias Islands), and southern Albay, covering areas such as Santo Domingo, Guinobatan, Legazpi City, Camalig, Ligao City, Rapu-Rapu, Pio Duran, Bacacay, Daraga, Malilipot, Jovellar, and Manito.
