In response to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive, San Miguel Corporation (SMC) has fast-tracked the cleanup of drainage systems along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City to help mitigate flooding in the area.

The cleanup operation is part of the company’s commitment to ensure that the ongoing construction of the MRT-7 project does not worsen the current flooding situation, especially during the southwest monsoon season. The massive infrastructure project, which spans several key areas in Metro Manila and Bulacan, has raised concerns over its potential impact on existing drainage systems and flood-prone zones.

According to SMC, intensified efforts are now underway to clear clogged drains and remove debris that may obstruct the free flow of rainwater. The company is working closely with local government units and concerned agencies to monitor and address possible flood-related issues in real time.

SMC President and CEO Ramon S. Ang emphasized the importance of balancing progress and public safety: “We are committed to making sure that while we build for the future, we also protect our communities today. We will not allow this project to be a cause of hardship for residents.”

The MRT-7, once completed, is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and improve mobility for thousands of commuters daily. However, with heavy rains battering Metro Manila in recent weeks, public concern over flooding risks has grown—prompting swift action from both the government and private sector.

Cleanup operations will continue in the coming weeks as SMC ramps up measures to prevent flooding and minimize inconvenience to the public.
