Five weak earthquakes rattled areas off Occidental Mindoro on Tuesday, December 2, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). All tremors were tectonic in origin and occurred southwest of the towns of Looc and Paluan.
The strongest among the sequence was a magnitude 4.2 quake detected at 7 p.m. some 31 kilometers southwest of Paluan at a depth of 10 kilometers. This was followed by a magnitude 3.0 tremor at 7:15 p.m., located 19 kilometers southwest of the same town at a shallow depth of 5 kilometers.
At 7:27 p.m., a magnitude 2.3 quake struck 26 kilometers southwest of Paluan at a depth of 9 kilometers.
Earlier in the day, at 12:17 p.m., Phivolcs also recorded a magnitude 1.4 tremor 37 kilometers southwest of Paluan, followed later by a magnitude 1.8 quake at 9:30 p.m. about 30 kilometers southwest of Looc.
Despite the series of quakes, Phivolcs emphasized that no damage or aftershocks are expected. The agency continues to monitor the area for any significant seismic activity.
