Senator Grace Poe calls for enhanced safety protocols in mass rail systems

On Thursday, Senator Grace Poe emphasized the urgent need for rigorous maintenance and safety protocols in the country’s mass rail systems, following recent simultaneous disruptions in the operations of the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) and the Light Rail Transit (LRT).

“The simultaneous stoppage of train operations must not be overlooked,” Poe stated, referencing reports of incidents, including one involving a burning wire, which she warned could pose a significant hazard to passengers if not addressed promptly.

While she welcomed the development of new railway lines, Poe stressed that ensuring the safety and reliability of existing systems should remain a top priority for transport authorities and operators. “Operators and relevant government agencies must ensure that the existing lines can transport our people safely and comfortably at all times,” she asserted.

Poe, who previously chaired the Senate Public Services Committee, highlighted the importance of regular inspections and preventive maintenance to prevent breakdowns that could inconvenience and endanger commuters.

“Our kababayans (countrymen) rely heavily on mass transportation, and every ride to their destination should be free from hassle or harm,” she added, underscoring the critical role of safe and reliable public transport in the daily lives of Filipinos.
