ISTANBUL – The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen announced Saturday that its air defense systems intercepted and destroyed a cruise missile launched by Houthi forces toward Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh region.

Coalition spokesperson Maj. Gen. Turki al-Maliki confirmed the interception in a statement posted on social media platform X.

“Air defenses intercepted and destroyed a cruise missile launched by the terrorist Houthi militia toward the Riyadh region,” al-Maliki said.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions and escalating hostilities between the Saudi-led coalition and Yemen’s Houthi group.

Saudi Arabia has headed a military coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognized government since March 2015, following the Houthis’ takeover of the capital, Sanaa, and other territories in September 2014.

The conflict has continued for more than a decade, with periodic missile and drone attacks contributing to security concerns across the region.
