Sarangani aftershock hits magnitude 5.3

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck off Sarangani town in Davao Occidental at noon Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported.

Phivolcs said the tremor was recorded at 12:03 p.m. west of Balut Island in Sarangani.

The quake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 10 kilometers.

The agency said the tremor was an aftershock of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that jolted waters off Sarangani on June 8.

Phivolcs said more aftershocks may still occur in the coming days.

A reported Intensity II was felt in General Santos City.

Instrumental Intensity III was recorded in General Santos City; Maasim, Malapatan, and Kiamba in Sarangani; and T’Boli in South Cotabato.

Instrumental Intensity II was logged in Malitbog, Bukidnon; Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat; Tupi, South Cotabato; and Maitum and Malungon in Sarangani, while Intensity I was recorded in Suralla, Tampakan, and Koronadal City in South Cotabato, and Digos City in Davao del Sur.
