‘Romina’ sparks Signal No. 1 for Kalayaan Islands

Tropical Depression “Romina,” which is located outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), has triggered the issuance of Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1 for the Kalayaan Islands, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported on Sunday.

At 10:00 a.m., Romina’s center was located 365 kilometers south of Kalayaan, Palawan (Pag-asa Island). The tropical depression is moving north-northeast at 30 kilometers per hour (kph), with maximum sustained winds of 55 kph and gusts reaching 70 kph. Its central pressure is measured at 1004 hPa. Its winds extend up to 200 kilometers from the center.

In addition to strong winds, Romina, along with a shear line, is expected to bring widespread rainfall to various regions across the country.

The Kalayaan Islands are forecast to experience intense to torrential rains—exceeding 200 millimeters (mm) of rainfall—through Monday noon, increasing the risk of severe flooding and landslides.

Palawan is also expected to see heavy to intense rainfall (100-200 mm), which could trigger significant flooding and landslides.

Meanwhile, moderate to heavy rains (50-100 mm) will affect other provinces, including Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, Antique, Aklan, Capiz, Iloilo, and Northern Samar, potentially causing localized flooding and landslides.
