Richard Gomez is returning to the big screen after seven years, and he says the timing couldn’t have been more fitting

Appearing on Fast Talk With Boy Abunda, the actor-turned-lawmaker opened up about why he decided to dive back into filmmaking just as political turmoil and corruption controversies continue to swirl in Congress.

According to Gomez, the compelling script for his new film arrived right when the legislative chamber was being rocked by flood control anomalies and heated accusations. He admitted that the chaos pushed him to seek a breather outside the political arena.

He shared that the script provided him with a chance to detach from the noise, calling it the right project at the right moment. Instead of staying in what he described as the messy atmosphere engulfing parts of government, Gomez said he chose to pour his energy into creating a film he believes in.

Gomez stars alongside Elijah Canlas in Salvageland, a thriller directed by Lino Cayetano. The story centers on a father-and-son tandem, both police officers, who find themselves taking on a dangerous crime syndicate in a fictional town on the fringes of Metro Manila. The cast also features Mon Confiado, Cindy Miranda, McCoy De Leon, and Angela Morena.

The fourth district Leyte representative said he is grateful for the opportunity to work on a strong project while still fulfilling his duties in public service. He added that even as political tensions continue to escalate, he takes pride in being able to produce something meaningful outside the halls of Congress.

Gomez previously served as mayor of Ormoc City before winning his congressional seat. Now, with Salvageland, he marks a new chapter—one that reconnects him with cinema while the rest of politics, as he puts it, continues to “sort itself out.”
