Generics Awareness Month took center stage at Mercury Drug’s Q-Plaza Branch in Cainta, as RHEA Generics joined forces with the Department of Health (DOH) and Mercury Drug to advance a shared mission: making affordable, high-quality healthcare accessible to every Filipino.

With the theme “Ginhawang Generics, Ramdam ng Bawat Pilipino,” the event highlighted the vital role of generic medicines in daily healthcare — from offering cost-effective treatments to ensuring consistent access to essential drugs nationwide. It also sought to dispel misconceptions surrounding generics, reaffirming that these medicines undergo the same rigorous testing and quality standards as branded drugs, guaranteeing equal safety and effectiveness.

The DOH expressed its strong support through a special video message, underscoring its long-standing advocacy under the Generics Act of 1988 and the Cheaper Medicines Act of 2008. The agency encouraged Filipinos to actively discuss generic options with their doctors and pharmacists, reminding them that informed choices not only empower patients but also strengthen public health systems.

Sharing the industry perspective, PHILUSA Corporation’s Pharmaceutical Business Unit Marketing Head, Ms. Giezel Jane Sarmiento, emphasized RHEA Generics’ role in redefining perceptions about generics.
“We want to transform the meaning of generics — from being seen as a ‘second choice’ to being recognized as a trusted, world-class choice,” she said. “No Filipino should ever have to choose between health and livelihood. Quality healthcare must always be within reach.”

Extending the celebration beyond awareness, RHEA Generics and Mercury Drug also hosted free medical clinics for Mercury Drug Suki members and nearby communities. Attendees received complimentary consultations, temperature checks, and screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol — making the advocacy tangible and accessible.

As a steadfast partner of the DOH, RHEA Generics continues to expand its portfolio through collaborations with leading global pharmaceutical companies, strengthening its commitment to deliver reliable and affordable medicines for all.

By bridging awareness with action, the event sent a clear message: access to quality treatment is not just a national vision but a collective responsibility shared by government, industry, and community alike.
