Alex Eala has already taken down one major name in Washington. Now, the Filipina tennis sensation is staring at an even bigger challenge—and a golden opportunity to settle an old score.
Fresh from a gritty comeback victory over China’s Zheng Qinwen, Eala will face defending champion Leylah Fernandez in the round of 16 of the Mubadala Citi DC Open late Wednesday.
The showdown carries an added layer of drama.
Eala and Fernandez met earlier this year at the WTA 500 Stuttgart Open, where the Filipino-Canadian star dominated their encounter, 6-1, 6-4. Fernandez repeatedly disrupted Eala’s rhythm and controlled the match from start to finish.
This time, however, Eala enters the battle with momentum—and growing confidence.
The 20-year-old Filipino displayed remarkable composure and endurance in her opening match, recovering from a set down to defeat former world No. 4 Zheng in a punishing three-set encounter that lasted two hours and 26 minutes.
The victory sent Eala into the next round and once again proved that she can survive—and win—against the sport’s elite.
But Fernandez is unlikely to give up her Washington crown easily.
The defending champion began her title defense in dominant fashion, brushing aside Magda Linette, 6-1, 6-4, to set up the highly anticipated rematch with Eala.
“I think it’s going to be a very tough match for me. Leylah’s such an amazing player and an amazing person as well,” Eala said.
The biggest question now is whether Eala can recover quickly enough after her exhausting battle with Zheng.
With the match scheduled to begin no earlier than 11 p.m., the Filipina star said her immediate focus is getting her body ready for another demanding contest.
“My first priority is to recover, take care of my body so that I can arrive in the best shape possible to compete,” she said.
Eala is playing in her first North American tournament as she builds toward the US Open in August.
But before turning her attention to New York, she has unfinished business in Washington.
Fernandez won their first meeting convincingly. Eala now has the chance to rewrite the script, dethrone the defending champion and deliver another statement victory on the global stage.
