Parañaque 2nd District Rep. Brian Raymund Yamsuan has called on fellow lawmakers to utilize digital platforms to build “bridges of transparency” that will improve public awareness of government programs, strengthen trust, and bring the government closer to the people.
In a privilege speech on Monday, Yamsuan stressed the need for government officials to move away from traditional, tedious processes and adopt digital solutions to make public services more accessible, simple, and efficient.
“In this digital age, information is no longer confined to the halls of government or the pages of textbooks — it flows through the screens and smartphones of every Filipino. And with that flow comes an opportunity: an opportunity to connect, to inform, to empower, and above all, to build trust,” he said.
Yamsuan highlighted that the Philippines, dubbed the “social media capital of the world” with 97.5 million internet users, should leverage online platforms to reach citizens effectively and raise awareness about government initiatives.
“The government, and we public servants, are often criticized for not doing enough to address problems or bridge gaps. But sometimes the issue is not the lack of programs, but the lack of awareness,” said the vice-chairperson of the House Committee on Public Information.
Citing surveys, Yamsuan noted that while 93% of Filipinos are familiar with the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), only 34% know about the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) program. Similarly, a 2023 Capstone-Intel survey showed that only 45% of respondents were aware of the Universal Health Care program.
Yamsuan urged public officials to deliver accurate, clear, and relevant information to constituents, saying this is key to regaining public trust and ensuring Filipinos feel the government’s presence and support.
“Let us harness every platform — not just to broadcast, but to listen, not just to speak, but to engage,” he added.
