The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said it would defer to the Sandiganbayan on decisions involving the confinement of former Public Works and Highways secretary Manuel Bonoan, as his medical condition continues to raise concern.
Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said the agency would submit a formal medical report to the anti-graft court, with full findings expected to be transmitted on Monday.
Remulla disclosed that Bonoan recently underwent two procedures following a heart attack, describing his condition as fragile and requiring close monitoring.
He stressed that the DILG would follow whatever directive the court issues, saying authorities “accede to the wisdom of the courts” in handling the case.
The Sandiganbayan earlier ordered Bonoan’s detention at the PNP General Hospital in Camp Crame instead of a private hospital in Pasig City, citing medical findings presented during proceedings.
Court information showed he is suffering from multiple serious illnesses, including heart disease, kidney failure, hypertension, diabetes, and cancer, based on records relayed by medical authorities.
Remulla said officials may still seek court approval to transfer him to a more advanced facility if his condition worsens and requires higher-level care.
Bonoan is facing graft and plunder charges alongside Senator Jinggoy Estrada and three other public works officials in connection with alleged anomalies in flood control projects.
