Reintegration support for returning OFWs from Israel, Iran urged

On Thursday, Senate Deputy Minority Leader Risa Hontiveros called on government agencies to prioritize reintegration assistance for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) returning from conflict-hit regions such as Israel and Iran.

In a statement, Hontiveros emphasized that the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Migrant Workers must not only expedite the repatriation process but also ensure that returning Filipinos receive proper care through programs designed to help them rebuild their lives. “At habang ginagawa ang mga ito, dapat handa na ang mga ahensya dito sa Pilipinas na tanggapin ang mga OFW na pabalik ng bansa (While these efforts are underway, agencies here in the Philippines must be ready to receive returning OFWs),” she stated.

The senator highlighted the necessity for well-prepared reintegration mechanisms, which should include livelihood assistance and psychosocial support, warning that many could face displacement if tensions in the Middle East escalate further. “Considering the potential number of Filipinos who may have to be evacuated from the region if this escalates, the government has to start organizing and making sure contingency plans are in place,” she said.

Hontiveros also suggested that mandatory repatriation should be considered for Filipinos residing in areas already affected by missile attacks, reiterating that those returning must not be left without support. “Hindi natin alam kailan huhupa ang sagupaang ito (We don’t know when this conflict will end). Government must be ready for all possible scenarios and ensure that no Filipino is left behind in this conflict,” she added.
