Tremors were recorded in Davao Occidental and Masbate this week as seismic activity continued in parts of the country, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
A magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck off Sarangani Island in Davao Occidental at 3:45 a.m. Wednesday. Its epicenter was located 24 kilometers northwest of the island.
The latest tremor followed a magnitude 4.6 aftershock that occurred early Tuesday west of Balut Island. Phivolcs said both earthquakes were part of the continuing aftershock sequence of the magnitude 7.8 offshore earthquake near Sarangani and the magnitude 6.6 offshore quake in Davao Occidental.
The magnitude 4.6 quake generated Instrumental Intensity III in Glan, Sarangani, and Instrumental Intensity I in General Santos City, Malungon in Sarangani, and Tupi in South Cotabato.
Meanwhile, a magnitude 4.7 earthquake jolted waters off Claveria, Masbate, on Tuesday afternoon. The quake’s epicenter was located 30 kilometers southwest of the municipality at a depth of four kilometers.
Phivolcs reported Intensity III in Catanauan and General Luna in Quezon, while Intensity II was felt in Pasacao, Camarines Sur, and the Quezon towns of San Andres, San Narciso, Buenavista, Macalelon and Guinayangan.
Instrumental Intensity II was recorded in Mulanay and Gumaca, Quezon. Instrumental Intensity I was also monitored in Legazpi City, Jose Panganiban in Camarines Norte, Pili and Sipocot in Camarines Sur, Boac in Marinduque, and Aroroy in Masbate.
Phivolcs also lifted its advisory on possible minor sea level disturbances following Tuesday’s Davao Occidental earthquake after monitoring stations detected no unusual changes during the observation period and no abnormal sea level activity was reported.
