ILIGAN CITY – The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) in Lanao del Norte has trained government personnel to use artificial intelligence (AI) tools for data analysis and visualization while emphasizing the importance of human verification and critical thinking.

The two-day training, held October 14 to 15 in partnership with the Iligan City Statistical Coordinating Council, formed part of the 37th National Statistics Month celebration.

Titled “Descriptive Analytics and Visualization with AI-Enabled Tools,” the workshop introduced participants to statistical analysis, data processing, and the use of AI platforms such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini.

Participants learned how to summarize datasets, identify trends, generate charts, and prepare statistical reports to support evidence-based policymaking and government planning.

PSA Lanao del Norte supervising statistical specialist Gregorio Violeta said integrating AI into data analytics could improve efficiency, strengthen data interpretation, and help government agencies make more informed decisions.

“By integrating AI-enabled tools into our analytics, we open doors to more efficient workflows, visualize data more effectively, gain sharper insights, and create impactful visualizations,” Violeta said.

However, PSA statistical analyst Marie Antonette Paasa reminded participants that AI-generated information must undergo careful verification before being included in official documents.

“We should not fully rely on AI because we still need to ensure that our data are accurate and validated on our end,” Paasa stressed.

Participants from various government offices and organizations welcomed the initiative, citing its practical applications in preparing reports, reviewing policies, and improving statistical presentations.

Mary Rose Basco of the Iligan City Administrator’s Office said AI could help accelerate report writing and policy analysis but should never replace human judgment.

She emphasized that critical thinking and human intervention remain essential to ensuring the accuracy and reliability of AI-assisted work.

The PSA said the initiative supports efforts to strengthen statistical literacy and encourage the responsible use of emerging technologies in government decision-making.
