MANILA – Defense Secretary Gilberto “Gibo” Teodoro Jr. has not ruled out the possibility of running for president in the 2028 national elections but emphasized that addressing the country’s pressing concerns remains his priority.
In a statement featured in an October 22, 2026 post, Teodoro said he was keeping his political options open despite having no immediate plans to pursue the presidency.
“I’m not saying that all doors are closed, that I will not consider it. I’m not going to actively shoot for it. At this time, there are more pressing issues,” Teodoro said.
His remarks suggest that while he is not actively seeking the country’s highest elective position, he remains open to considering a presidential bid in the future.
Teodoro, who currently heads the Department of National Defense (DND), has been overseeing the country’s defense and security priorities, including military modernization and efforts to strengthen national security.
The defense chief previously sought the presidency in the 2010 national elections.
For now, Teodoro maintained that his attention remains focused on more urgent matters rather than preparations for the 2028 elections.
