Upgrading power facilities while keeping electricity flowing is getting a boost from Manila Electric Company (Meralco), which has deployed the Philippines’ first 34.5-kilovolt (kV) mobile switchgear.
The trailer-mounted equipment provides temporary switching and protection capabilities, helping the utility carry out critical substation upgrades while minimizing service disruptions. Its mobility also allows Meralco to move it where needed during emergencies and planned equipment replacements.
The unit is now operating at Sun Valley Substation in Parañaque City, temporarily serving three feeders while the existing 34.5-kV gas-insulated switchgear is replaced. This arrangement helps sustain electricity service to customers in surrounding areas as modernization work proceeds.
Equipped with one bus-tie, three feeder breakers and protective equipment, the mobile switchgear gives the Manuel V. Pangilinan-led utility greater flexibility in managing its network.
“Our priority is to maintain reliable power service to our customers, even as we upgrade and modernize our facilities. With this mobile switchgear, we can carry out critical equipment replacements while minimizing service disruptions. More importantly, we can deploy it to other locations where it is needed, allowing more customers to benefit from this investment,” said Meralco Senior Vice President and Head of Networks Engr. Froilan J. Savet.
The deployment forms part of Meralco’s continuing investment in distribution system modernization, strengthening its ability to maintain reliable service while replacing and upgrading essential equipment.
