MANILA –As commuters return from the provinces after a peaceful Undas (All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days), the Philippine National Police (PNP) will continue to be on alert and vigilant, especially in airports, piers and transport terminals.
PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo said in a radio interview Sunday no significant untoward incidents happened during the observance of the Undas, except for a fire inside the Bagbag Cemetery in Novaliches, Quezon City on Nov. 1 that affected about 30 families.
“Masaya tayong ma-ireport na naging mapayapa at maayos naman sa pangkalahatan nationwide ang naging paggunita ng Undas ngayong taon dahil wala naman tayong naitala na major incident na maaaring makadisrupt ng ating paggunita (We are happy to report that the observance of Undas was generally peaceful and orderly nationwide this year because we did not record any major incidents that could disrupt our commemoration),” she said.
According to Fajardo, about 18,000 of its officers were deployed to secure transportation hubs, thoroughfares, and cemeteries during the Undas weekend.
Fajardo also said that the PNP continues to assist in military-led relief operations in areas severely affected by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine and Super Typhoon Leon, especially in the Bicol Region.
She said that some members of the police were not spared by the weather disturbances, reporting that some 3,200 uniformed officers and nearly 200 non-uniformed employees were affected, mostly in Bicol provinces.
The PNP gave financial assistance to the affected officers and staff. (PNA)
