MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) has ordered an immediate boost in police visibility in communities and across public spaces during nighttime following recent global survey findings showing concerns about personal safety after sunset.
The Philippines scored 84 out of 100 overall on the Gallup Law and Order Index, which matches the law and order situation in the United States and the United Kingdom.
PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. lauded all personnel on the frontline, particularly those deployed for police visibility and beat patrol, saying those measures are not only crime prevention measures but also give peace of mind to the people.
The survey data reinforce the consistent decline in crime rate across the country, particularly on index crimes, but Nartatez wants to immediately address a result in the same survey showing that only 64 percent of Filipinos feel safe walking alone at night in their communities.
“The report is a reminder that maintaining peace and order is not measured by crime statistics alone. Our success must also be reflected in the confidence of every Filipino inside their home, in walking the streets and in moving around their communities without fear any time of the day,” Nartatez said in a statement.
According to data cited in a report, the disparity suggests that while many Filipinos continue to express confidence in law enforcement institutions, concerns remain about personal security in public spaces after dark.
“This is why I am directing all police regional directors and local chiefs of police to reassess their nighttime deployment, intensify mobile and foot patrols, and strengthen police visibility in identified crime-prone areas,” Nartatez said.
“We must bring police presence closer to the communities and ensure that no area is overlooked, particularly during hours when people are most vulnerable.”
Under the directive, regional and local police commanders are required to review patrol schedules and personnel distribution, particularly in areas with recurring nighttime crimes and locations frequently used by commuters, workers, students, and residents returning home in the evening.
This is in line with the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., through the guidance of Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla, to ensure visible, responsive, and community-centered policing throughout the country.
Alongside heightened patrols, Nartatez instructed local police units to collaborate directly with local government officials.
Regional and local police commanders are tasked with helping improve street lighting, maximizing closed-circuit television coverage, bridging local security gaps, and launching community-based crime prevention initiatives.
“To all our kababayan (fellow citizens), your safety is our responsibility, and we recognize that public trust must be earned through consistent and visible action. We will continue to strengthen our presence, respond promptly to your concerns, and pursue those who threaten the peace and security of our communities,” Nartatez said. (PNA)
