The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday maintained that its investigation into the May 13 shooting inside the Senate was thorough and evidence-based, amid calls for further scrutiny.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez said their findings were the result of a careful review of available evidence and the sustained efforts of investigators assigned to the case.

He said the police force remained prepared to account for its conclusions and would welcome any examination by other bodies looking into the incident.

The statement came after Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano disclosed plans to have the chamber’s public order panel conduct its own inquiry into the shooting.

Cayetano earlier said law enforcement agencies would be invited to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the incident during the Senate probe.

Nartatez noted that the PNP had already forwarded its investigation report to the Department of Justice for appropriate action.

He added that the police organization would adhere to established legal procedures and continue to cooperate with any parallel investigation.

The PNP chief said investigators remained committed to transparency and to determining the full truth behind the shooting inside the Senate complex.
