Police seized suspected smuggled cigarettes worth about Php 2.292 million and arrested two men during a checkpoint operation in Zamboanga City on June 25.
The Philippine National Police said the operation was conducted in Barangay Campo Islam by the 2nd Zamboanga City Mobile Force Company “Seaborne” in coordination with Zamboanga City Police Station 11.
Authorities said police officers flagged down a blue-gray closed van at the checkpoint after noticing boxes inside the vehicle.
The van was driven by a 33-year-old man, while his 31-year-old companion served as the vanman, according to the PNP.
Police said the driver initially appeared evasive before admitting that the vehicle was carrying cigarettes.
When the vehicle was opened for inspection, authorities found 40 boxes of suspected smuggled cigarettes bearing the “Walton” brand.
The suspects failed to present importation documents, customs clearance or other papers proving the lawful transport and possession of the cigarettes, police said.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Nartatez said checkpoints remain vital in stopping the movement of illegal goods, adding that police would continue intensified anti-smuggling operations as the seized cigarettes and vehicle are set to be turned over to the Bureau of Customs for proper disposition.
