Seven individuals were arrested and more than Php 13.3 million worth of smuggled cigarettes were seized in separate police operations in Lanao del Norte and Agusan del Norte, authorities said.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported that the operations were carried out on May 8 and 9 as part of its continuing campaign against smuggling.
In Linamon, Lanao del Norte, police and intelligence units conducted a checkpoint operation in Barangay Samburon that led to the arrest of five men suspected of transporting contraband.
Authorities confiscated 289 boxes of cigarettes believed to be smuggled, with an estimated value of Php 11.56 million, along with four vehicles allegedly used in the transport.
A separate operation in Jabonga, Agusan del Norte resulted in the arrest of two men after police intercepted another shipment of cigarettes.
Seized in the second operation were 2,311 reams and 35 packs of cigarettes valued at around Php 1.8 million, as well as a utility vehicle allegedly used in the activity.
All suspects and confiscated items were brought to local police stations for documentation and case preparation.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) said the operations are part of sustained efforts to curb illegal trade and protect government revenue, with further enforcement actions expected in other areas.
