The Philippine National Police (PNP) recorded a decline in ordinance violations nationwide, citing improved public compliance under the Safer Cities Initiative.
PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. attributed the trend to growing cooperation from communities in observing local rules and regulations.
“The numbers don’t lie. Malaking bahagi nito ay ang kooperasyon ng publiko,” Nartatez said in a statement.
He added that consistent and fair enforcement helped shift public behavior from fear of arrest toward voluntary compliance with ordinances.
The Safer Cities Initiative, launched on April 6, strengthened enforcement against public drinking, curfew violations for minors, loitering without shirts, and late-night karaoke activities.
PNP data showed violations dropped to 6,514 on April 19 from a peak of 13,139 on April 7, although total cases still exceeded 119,000 during the initial weeks of implementation.
Most violations involved drinking in public places, followed by curfew breaches, topless loitering, and karaoke beyond allowed hours.
Nartatez said sustained improvement would depend on continued cooperation between communities and law enforcement agencies.
The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has also encouraged local governments to pass ordinances aligned with the initiative to ensure uniform enforcement.
He said standardized local laws would prevent inconsistent implementation and strengthen accountability in maintaining safer urban communities.
