The Philippine National Police (PNP) is stepping up its presence along major roads as more travelers are expected after the New Year, Acting Chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said Sunday.
Police units have been instructed to enforce traffic laws, conduct sobriety checkpoints, and monitor accident-prone areas.
The Highway Patrol Group is working with local government units, the Department of Transportation, and other agencies to manage traffic flow on highways, expressways, transport terminals, and areas hosting New Year events.
A total of 56,785 PNP personnel have been deployed nationwide, with 11,129 stationed at motorist assistance hubs to provide support to travelers.
Officers will also help inspect passenger buses and check drivers’ physical and mental readiness to ensure safer travel.
Authorities reminded motorists to follow traffic rules and cooperate with police officers for a smoother and safer journey.
The deployment is part of the PNP’s broader holiday security measures, which included an additional 30,000 personnel during the Christmas season.
