PNP, PDEA intercept cocaine worth ₱127M off Palawan coast

MANILA — In a significant blow to maritime drug trafficking, the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) jointly seized an estimated ₱127 million worth of suspected cocaine floating off the coast of Palawan.

According to authorities, the seizure resulted from immediate action after local reports of suspicious packages either washed ashore or drifting near coastal barangays were filed. These tip-offs led to a coordinated response by maritime units and law-enforcement agencies patrolling the region.

While the exact number of drug bricks, the route of entry and posssible syndicate involvement remain under investigation, PDEA described the haul as part of a broader push to dismantle sea-borne smuggling networks exploiting the Philippines’ vast archipelagic coastline.

Officials emphasised the critical role that coastal communities and fisherfolk played in notifying authorities, enabling the swift recovery before the illicit cargo could be distributed or moved to other destinations. The operation highlights the growing need for vigilance in coastal areas often viewed as weak points in the nation’s counter-narcotics efforts.

In a statement, regional authorities pledged to intensify maritime patrols and strengthen inter-agency cooperation to deter future smuggling attempts. The bust also sends a clear message: illicit trafficking via waterways will not evade detection.

As investigations continue, both PNP and PDEA have called for the public’s continued support, encouraging residents to report any suspicious maritime activity to help protect the country’s seas from illegal activities.
