The Philippine National Police (PNP) said it would deploy free ride services for commuters expected to be affected by a three-day transport strike starting April 15.

Police chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the initiative aimed to assist the public while ensuring order during the protest action.

He said police personnel would be assigned both for security operations and to help transport stranded passengers through the Libreng Sakay program.

Authorities had yet to announce the specific routes where the free transport services would be available.

The transport group Manibela earlier announced the planned strike to press the government for action on rising fuel prices.

The group cited continued increases in oil costs linked to tensions in the Middle East as the reason for the protest.

The PNP said it would coordinate with transport leaders to implement safety measures and manage the situation during the strike period.

Nartatez said law enforcers would exercise restraint while reminding organizers of their responsibility to ensure that demonstrations remain peaceful.
