Around 15 kilograms of suspected shabu worth PHP102 million were seized by the Philippine National Police – Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) during a checkpoint operation in Catbalogan City, Samar on Wednesday.
PNP-HPG spokesperson Lt. Nadame Malang said the driver of an Asia Utility Vehicle (AUV), identified only as Topher, appeared nervous when flagged at a checkpoint along Maharlika Highway in Barangay Mahayag at around 11:55 a.m.
Police officers noticed suspiciously packed items in the vehicle’s back seat. Upon questioning, the driver admitted they were carrying illegal substances.
“Talagang mavi-visualize na nakapack ang 15 kilos na hinihinalang shabu. Nang tinanong na ng mga tropa, doon sila umamin na sila ay may dala-dalang iligal na kontrabando,” Malang said.
He added that the suspected drugs will be turned over to the forensic group for verification. “We are still seeking the advice and certification from the forensic group at ito ay ituturnover na para mapag-alaman natin kung ito ba talaga ay shabu,” he noted.
HPG Chief Brig. Gen. Eleazar P. Matta praised the checkpoint team for their alertness.
“This interdiction highlights how proactive and intelligence-led road safety enforcement can disrupt the movement of illegal drugs across our highways,” Matta said.
The suspect is now in police custody and will face charges under the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act.
