The Philippine National Police joined several government agencies in destroying more than Php 14.5 million worth of confiscated illegal cigarettes in Lipa City, Batangas.
The disposal was conducted on July 16 at a licensed recycling and waste management facility, where 233 master cases of contraband cigarettes were destroyed under official supervision.
Authorities valued the seized products at Php 14,507,127. The cigarettes had been confiscated during separate law enforcement operations in Bulacan, Laguna and Batangas.
Representatives from the Bureau of Internal Revenue, the Department of Justice, local government units, police oversight and intelligence offices, and members of the media witnessed the activity to ensure transparency and compliance with legal procedures.
Officials said the controlled destruction ensured that the confiscated products could no longer be redistributed or returned to commercial circulation, while also supporting proper evidence management.
The PNP said the operation formed part of its continuing campaign against illicit trade and other economic crimes, as authorities sought to protect consumers, safeguard government revenues and support legitimate businesses.
PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said law enforcement efforts did not end with the confiscation of illegal goods, stressing that authorities must also ensure seized contraband is permanently removed from circulation.
He also underscored the importance of coordination among law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, local government units and other partners, saying joint efforts help strengthen public trust while ensuring seized illegal products are properly accounted for and lawfully disposed of.
