The Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA), the country’s accredited organization for CPAs, has conferred its prestigious Honorary Life Membership on SM Investments Chairman Emeritus Jose T. Sio, celebrating a career that has reshaped Philippine business and elevated the accounting profession.
PICPA cited Mr. Sio for more than two decades of steadfast service to the institution, marked by his exemplary achievements, enduring commitment to professional development, and active leadership across various accounting and industry organizations.
In accepting the honor, Mr. Sio reflected on the crucial role accountants play in shaping strong and trusted institutions. “I am honored by this recognition from fellow professionals in the field. Accountancy plays a significant role in the growth and integrity of many Philippine businesses, helping build the trust and confidence of company stockholders. I am privileged to be part of organizations, like the SM group, that view the field as a crucial part of the company’s growth journey,” he said.
The distinction adds to an already illustrious list of accolades. Mr. Sio received the Accountancy Centenary Award of Excellence in 2023 and the Parangal San Mateo in 2022, the highest honor bestowed on Filipino accounting professionals.
Born and raised in Iloilo, Mr. Sio earned his Commerce degree, majoring in Accounting, at the University of San Agustin, and later completed his MBA at New York University. His ascent in corporate leadership began long before he became Chairman of SM Investments in 2017. As the company’s Chief Finance Officer starting in 1990, he led the group through pivotal expansions and was repeatedly recognized by global and regional institutions, earning titles such as CFO Superstar in Asia (1997), CFO of the Year from ING Bank and FINEX (2009), CFO of the Year–Philippines from The Asset (2010), and Best CFO honors at the Finance Asia Awards (2011).
Mr. Sio also played a central role in SM Investments’ landmark 2005 initial public offering, which stood as the country’s largest IPO for 15 years and made SM one of the first Philippine companies to reach a P1-trillion market capitalization.
Beyond SM Investments, he continues to lend his expertise to several major corporations. He sits on the boards of China Banking Corporation, Atlas Mining, and NLEX Corporation, serves as Board Adviser to BDO Unibank, and leads SM Foundation, Inc. as Chairman and President. He is likewise a trustee of Far Eastern University and Asia Pacific College.
PICPA’s Honorary Life Membership stands as a testament not only to Mr. Sio’s storied career, but to a legacy of integrity, discipline, and financial stewardship that has helped shape some of the country’s most influential institutions.
