The Philippines is set to make its biggest international literary showcase as Guest of Honour at the 2025 Frankfurt Book Fair from October 15 to 19, bringing over 400 delegates and a rich program highlighting the country’s diverse stories, languages, and creative industries.
The centerpiece is the 2,000-square-meter Philippine Guest of Honour Pavilion titled “The imagination peoples the air.” Designed by Stanley Ruiz and curated by Patrick Flores, the pavilion offers an immersive experience with rattan and bamboo seating for talks and readings, translucent walls featuring artworks by Gary-Ross Pastrana, Mervin Malonzo, and the late David Medalla.
More than 500 Philippine titles will be showcased, alongside 100+ talks, readings, and performances curated by Karina Bolasco. Discussions will cover human rights, democracy, climate change, queer narratives, children’s literature, and religion — blending intellectual dialogue with live performances. For example, the panel “How Do We Write About Climate Change?” will close with a performance of Ryan Cayabyab’s “Paraiso” by the Philippine Madrigal Singers and Song Weavers Philippines.
Notable participants include Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa, journalist Patricia Evangelista, National Artists Virgilio Almario and Ryan Cayabyab, and acclaimed authors Jose Dalisay and Marjorie Evasco. Performances will feature Kuwerdas Filipinas, Akayu from Kalinga, and hip-hop collective Morobeats.
Beyond the pavilion, the Philippine Stand will host rights negotiations with 52 publishers, complemented by a Comics Stand and Asia Stage programming, which will feature business talks on Southeast Asia’s publishing market, censorship, comics, and AI.
The Guest of Honour role also brings a cultural program across Germany and Switzerland, including exhibitions, concerts, film screenings, and events such as “Jose on the Go: A Rizal Stroll” with historian Ambeth Ocampo, “Komiks Live!” at Romanfabrik, and “Liwaliw in Hanau” — a celebration of Filipino games, food, and music.
This milestone highlights the Philippines’ thriving creative economy, valued at ₱1.94 trillion in 2024 (7.3% of GDP), covering media, publishing, music, digital services, and cultural events.
Led by the National Book Development Board, NCCA, DFA, and the Office of Senator Loren Legarda, this marks the Philippines as only the second Southeast Asian nation to take the prestigious Guest of Honour role at the Frankfurt Book Fair.
