Philippine Meistersingers sing their way to global glory in Italy

In a stunning display of talent that resonated across Europe, the Philippine Meistersingers have clinched the prestigious Grand Prix at the Rimini International Choral Competition in Italy.

More than just a win, this victory has cemented their status on the global stage, proving that the heart and soul of Filipino music can conquer the world.

The ensemble’s performance was nothing short of spectacular, earning gold medals in both the Musica Sacra (Sacred) and Musica Profana (Secular) categories.

The judges were moved, praising the choir for their rare combination of technical brilliance and emotional depth.

They specifically highlighted the Meistersingers’ “disciplined blend and tonal control” in their sacred works, and their “rhythmic precision and expressive storytelling” in their secular repertoire.

Musical director Ramon Molina Lijauco Jr. said the key to their success was the unmistakable Filipino sound.

“The European choirs had a distinct and beautiful sound, but the judges told us we stood out for how we shaped our interpretation—the blend, the intelligence of the repertoire, and the unity between the choir and conductor,” he shared.

For the group, the journey to Rimini was deeply personal.

“More than a competition, it became a journey of faith for all of us,” said Lijauco.

The dedication of the younger members, who rose to the challenge and performed alongside choirs from countries like the Czech Republic, Poland, and Indonesia, was a testament to the passion and spirit of Filipino artistry.

Notably, their winning program included pieces by Filipino-American composer Nilo Alcala II, ensuring that a piece of their heritage traveled with them to the Italian stage.

With this monumental triumph, the Philippine Meistersingers have become the first Filipino choir to qualify for the World Choral Championship.

The Philippine Meistersingers are now set to compete against champions from Tokyo and Taipei at the World Choral Championship in Kraków, Poland, in 2026.

The next phase begins immediately as the choir starts preparing their repertoire and raising funds to ensure they can make it to the finals and bring home yet another global title.

Their story is a powerful reminder that with faith, unity, and a compelling voice, Filipino talent has an exciting future on the world stage.
