MANILA – The Philippines has urged the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to provide more flexible financing options to speed up infrastructure development, encourage private investments, and strengthen climate-resilient energy projects.

In a statement Friday, the Department of Finance (DOF) said International Finance Group Undersecretary Joven Balbosa raised the proposal during the Governors’ Business Roundtable Discussion at the AIIB’s 2026 Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors in Doha, Qatar, on September 28.

The discussions centered on expanding the bank’s development impact and introducing innovative financing solutions throughout the project cycle.

“We urge the Bank to continue developing innovative financial instruments and mobilizing private capital. We call on the Bank to prioritize scaling renewable energy, reducing power costs, and strengthening climate adaptation and mitigation projects,” Balbosa said.

The Philippines also pushed for additional grants and technical assistance to improve project preparation and social development outcomes.

It further called for reduced commitment fees and more flexible mechanisms to address delays and other challenges affecting project implementation.

Balbosa, who serves as one of the AIIB’s 12 directors, represents the Philippines in the institution’s governance and policy discussions.

The AIIB is a multilateral development bank that supports sustainable infrastructure development across Asia through financing and investment partnerships.
