The Philippines has been officially recognized as one of the 16 “Most Exciting Food Destinations for 2026” by the Michelin Guide, marking a significant milestone for the country’s burgeoning culinary industry.
The Department of Tourism (DOT) announced the inclusion this week, noting that the recognition focuses heavily on the diverse gastronomic landscapes of Manila and Cebu. The guide highlights the Philippines alongside established culinary powerhouses such as Italy, China, and Canada.
A Landmark Year for Filipino Gastronomy
Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco hailed the recognition as a validation of the country’s “exceptional culinary potential.”
“Gastronomy is a vital expression of our national identity,” Frasco said in a statement.
“This recognition supports our broader goal of strengthening sustainable tourism by celebrating what is authentically Filipino and by elevating the people and places behind our food.”
The announcement follows the historic October 30 arrival of the Michelin Guide in the Philippines, which saw 108 establishments across Manila and Cebu receive honors:
• 1 restaurant awarded Two Michelin Stars
• 8 restaurants awarded One Michelin Star
• 25 Bib Gourmand recipients
• 74 Michelin-Selected establishments
Traditional Flavors Meet Modern Technique
Anonymous Michelin inspectors praised the balance of traditional and modern cooking techniques found in the country, specifically highlighting the talent of young local chefs.
The guide specifically recommended staples such as sisig, sinigang, inasal, and adobo, noting the unique Filipino profile of sweet, salty, and acidic flavors derived from regional spices and fruits.
Inspectors also credited the country’s year-round tropical climate for providing the high-quality fresh produce that serves as the foundation of the local food scene.
Integrated Travel Experience
Beyond the kitchen, the Michelin Guide recommended several luxury accommodations to complement the culinary journey, including the Grand Hyatt Manila and Shangri-La at the Fort.
In Cebu, beachfront properties such as the Dusit Thani Mactan and Crimson Resort & Spa were highlighted for international travelers.
The DOT views this recognition as a precursor to a major year for Philippine tourism. In 2026, the country is also scheduled to host the UN Tourism World Gastronomy Forum, further cementing its position as a global destination for food enthusiasts.
