Petro Gazz’s Gia Day seeks growth despite dominant win in AVC Champions League

Despite a stellar performance in Petro Gazz’s commanding 25-8, 25-12, 25-12 victory over Hong Kong’s Hip Hing in the AVC Women’s Champions League on Tuesday at the PhilSports Arena, import Gia Day wasn’t fully satisfied with her showing.

Day spearheaded the Angels’ offense with 18 points off attacks, while also contributing eight excellent digs and three receptions. But for the American reinforcement, there’s still room for refinement.

“I’m a little disappointed with myself today. I did some messy things that I can clean up,” Day admitted. “I’m always analyzing each day after and expecting the most out of myself.”

Her focus areas? Passing and confidence.

“I think I can pass a little bit better so that we can run our whole offense. That’s number one. Number two, just staying confident—sometimes I’m really hard on myself,” she said. “So I’ll accept the positivity from my team and not get so down on myself.”

While Day is her own toughest critic, she expressed deep appreciation for the trust and support she’s received from her teammates and head coach Koji Tsuzurabara.

“They’ve put no stress on me, no pressure. They’ve made this so much fun. All the pressure comes from myself,” she shared. “Not from the team, not even from the coach. He hasn’t said one demanding thing to me—which is strange, but I’m so thankful for each and every one of them.”

Day and the rest of the Angels now prepare for their toughest test yet—a quarterfinal clash with Chinese powerhouse Beijing Baic Motor, a match that will demand nothing short of their best as they aim to advance deeper into the tournament.
