The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in Southern Visayas has launched a new task force focused on sustainable development and long-term protection of Siquijor’s marine resources. Task Force Yaman Dagat, created in partnership with the Siquijor provincial government and local stakeholders, aims to strengthen conservation efforts in one of the region’s key tourist destinations.
Lt. Junior Grade Rachel Diputado, head of the Marine Environmental Protection Enforcement and Response Group, said the initiative is a shared effort between the government and communities. “We launched Task Force Yaman Dagat in Siquijor on Monday, following the creation of the Negros Island Region, and especially since Siquijor is one of the tourist spots in the region,” she told the Philippine News Agency.
The launch was attended by Vice Admiral Roy Echeverria, Commodore Christopher Auro, local officials, and community partners. Diputado emphasized that the task force highlights the essential role of local participation, especially among fishing communities, to ensure long-term sustainability.
The initiative includes regular monitoring of marine protected areas, information campaigns on waste management, and training on emergency response techniques. Representatives from various agencies affirmed their full support by signing a pledge of commitment during the event.
