Impeachment lawyer, Atty. Amando Virgil Ligutan, observed that the President’s position on the impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte represents a “softening of stance.”
“For me, there is a softening in the stance of the President when it comes to impeachment, from saying that it would not serve any purpose to his latest statement when he said that the timing is poor,” Ligutan said, who serves as the legal counsel of individuals behind the third impeachment complaint filed against the Vice President.
A total of three complaints have been filed and submitted to the House of Representatives, though there have been delays in filing. Additionally, a statement from a congressman has suggested that some lawmakers are losing interest in the ouster efforts.
In November, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. gave statement, discouraging the filing of impeachment complaints against the Vice President, calling it a “waste of time.”
Those who submitted impeachment complaints have expressed frustration over the delays in initiating the proceedings.
House secretary-general Reginald Velasco stated that he would wait for the possible fourth impeachment complaint to be filed by the end of this week.
“Ito ay actually disservice sa nag-file ng naunang tatlong impeachment complainants. Pinaghintay ang mga complainants at ‘yung mga nag-endorse para doon sa pang-apat, nang hindi naman pala malinaw ano talaga ang mangyayari d’yan,” Kabataan Party-list Rep. Raoul Manuel, an endorser of the 2nd impeachment, said.
Meanwhile, Ligutand said, “If the House of Representatives does not impeach the Vice President of the Republic of the Philippines, the House will betray the entire Filipino people. Why? Because the impeachment complaints were filed as a result of the findings, a result of the committee hearings conducted by the same House.”
