PBBM: ‘I listen to criticism, because sometimes they’re right’

MANILA – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said he remains open to criticism, acknowledging that while some may be unfair or personal, others can raise valid concerns.

Marcos made the remarks in an interview with singer Gary Valenciano on the “Unshaken with Gary V” podcast aired Monday, where he discussed how he handles constant public scrutiny as President.

“You must have the strength of your convictions that if you believe in something, it doesn’t matter what the judgment of some other people is,” Marcos said.

He, however, stressed the importance of listening to critics, noting that their views can sometimes be valid.

“On the other hand, I listen to criticism because sometimes they’re right,” he said.

Marcos said he tries to distinguish personal or hurtful remarks from criticism that may have a legitimate point.

“Mostly they’re not right, but sometimes, sometimes they are,” he said.

The President also said the demands of his position require him to remain focused despite personal concerns, physical fatigue and constant public attention.

“You take responsibility for everything. And once you do that, you function, you’re able to function,” he said.

Marcos said this responsibility is particularly important because his decisions can affect millions of Filipinos.

“What I do, what I decide to do, affects many other people, sometimes millions of people,” he said. “So you have to be very careful about getting it right.”

On handling pressure, Marcos said he focuses on the task at hand instead of dwelling on other concerns, even when he is worried or feeling unwell.

“You just have to do it,” Marcos said, describing how he sometimes continues working despite having a cold, feeling physically unwell or coming from his “sick bed.”

“Stop thinking so hard about it, just go and do it,” he said.
