MANILA – Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) Administrator Sonia Malaluan has filed her intent to retire after nearly 37 years in service, the agency said Monday.
The retirement takes effect Oct. 1, 2026, or until a new Administrator or Acting Administrator is designated, the agency said in a statement.
The Office of the President has yet to act on Malaluan’s intent to retire.
Pending the designation of a successor, Malaluan continues to perform her duties and responsibilities in accordance with existing laws, rules and regulations.
“MARINA assures its stakeholders, partners, and the maritime public that the Authority’s operations, programs, and services continue without interruption,” the statement read.
The agency said Malaluan’s retirement is a personal decision.
Malaluan, 60, joined MARINA in 1989 and has risen from the ranks after she was appointed as administrator in December 2023.
She holds a master’s degree in public administration from the National University of Singapore and a master’s degree in shipping management from the World Maritime University in Sweden.
MARINA expressed appreciation for her service and leadership, and for her contributions to the continued development of the Philippine maritime industry.
