PBA closes draft loophole, bars players with active contracts from entering rookie pool

The Philippine Basketball Association is tightening its draft rules, announcing that rookie prospects with live contracts in other leagues will no longer be allowed to apply for the PBA Draft.

Commissioner Willie Marcial said the policy shift was approved by the PBA Board during its meeting last week and will take effect beginning with the Season 51 Draft next year.

“So once nag-apply ka sa draft, dapat wala kang kontrata sa ibang team sa ibang liga,” Marcial explained. “Para once ma-draft and ma-sign ka ng mother team mo, makakalaro ka na agad.”

Under the previous setup, players—particularly those coming from leagues like the MPBL—were allowed to join the draft even if they were still bound by existing contracts.

While legal, the arrangement often left PBA teams in limbo, forced to wait months or even longer for their drafted players to complete obligations elsewhere before suiting up in Asia’s pioneering professional league.

That uncertainty, Marcial said, was a growing concern among team owners and executives, prompting the league to act decisively.

With the new rule in place, all draft applicants must now be fully contract-free before entering the selection process, ensuring that once a player hears his name called, he can immediately report, sign, and play for his PBA team.

For the league, it marks a move toward greater clarity and competitiveness. For teams, it promises fewer headaches—and for fans, a faster arrival of fresh talent onto the PBA stage.
