Local authorities in Pangasinan said Thursday that at least 29 people were hurt by firecrackers during New Year festivities.

Two of the victims suffered severe injuries, with one losing a finger and another a toe.

Dr. Maria Camila Rosario of the Region I Medical Center (RIMC) reported that 11 patients arrived at the hospital around midnight Wednesday, when celebrations were at their peak.

An additional nine injuries were recorded in the days leading up to New Year’s, between December 25 and 30.

Victims ranged widely in age, from a three-year-old child to a 45-year-old adult.

Most cases involved bystanders accidentally struck by fireworks, totaling 20 of the 29 patients.

RIMC is continuing to track firecracker-related injuries, expecting the number to rise through January 6.

Hospital officials urged residents to avoid risky fireworks and to seek immediate medical attention, including anti-tetanus shots, if injured.
