The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced on Friday that up to 17 cyclones are expected to develop or enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) from this month until January 2026. For August alone, PAGASA forecasts two to three cyclones to affect the country.
As of Friday, a low pressure area (LPA) being monitored outside the PAR has developed into a tropical depression around 2 p.m. It was last tracked approximately 1,350 km east-northeast of extreme Northern Luzon. However, PAGASA indicated that this tropical depression is not expected to have a direct impact on the Philippines.
The prevailing southwest monsoon is anticipated to continue bringing rains, particularly to several areas across Luzon. PAGASA’s forecast suggests that the country could experience two to four cyclones in September and October, two to three in November, one or two in December, and zero or one in January.
Additionally, PAGASA mentioned that a tropical cyclone-like vortex could potentially develop in the eastern part of its monitoring domain from August 1 to 7, although it has a slim chance of evolving into a cyclone. This vortex may enter the PAR between August 8 and 14, but it is still unlikely to develop into a full-fledged cyclone, according to the agency.
