Pagasa: Expect Amihan peak on Tuesday, Nov. 18

Residents, particularly those across Luzon, are advised to brace for a notable change in weather conditions as the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has forecast a “somewhat strong” surge of the Northeast Monsoon, locally known as amihan, beginning on Tuesday, November 18.

In a weather update issued Monday morning, Pagasa specialist Dan Villamil said the surge is expected to affect a significant portion of Luzon, particularly the mainland.

“Tomorrow, Tuesday, we expect a surge of the northeast monsoon. This surge is somewhat strong,” Villamil noted, adding that the intense cool winds are part of the ongoing amihan season, which began in late October and is expected to continue until March of the following year.

The primary effect of the strengthened monsoon will be a noticeable decrease in minimum temperatures, bringing cooler, crisp air, especially during the early morning hours. Furthermore, the surge is anticipated to lead to a decrease in afternoon and evening thunderstorm activity.

Pagasa also warned that the strong winds accompanying the surge are likely to generate powerful waves. The agency is considering raising a gale warning for the waters north and west of Luzon, urging fishermen and maritime operators in these areas to exercise extreme caution.

Forecasters indicate that the monsoon is not expected to peak immediately; Villamil stated that the northeast winds will “further strengthen” between Thursday and Friday.
