Police intercepted 80 master cases of suspected smuggled cigarettes worth approximately P5.2 million during an early-morning operation at a wharf in Zamboanga City on Monday, November 2.
Personnel of Police Station 6, Zamboanga City Police Office, in coordination with Police Station 12, intercepted the shipment at the sea wharf along Lapu-Lapu Drive in Barangay Arena Blanco.
Authorities said the confiscated cigarettes were placed under the custody of Police Station 12 for proper documentation and disposition.
Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. emphasized the need for sustained vigilance against smuggling, particularly in areas serving as entry points for illegally traded goods.
“Kapag may kahina-hinalang shipment, kailangan itong masuri at maaksyunan sa tamang paraan. We cannot allow illegal trade to go unchecked because it affects legitimate businesses and the broader economy,” Nartatez said.
He also directed police personnel to remain alert, act on reliable information, and ensure that operations comply with the law.
The operation was conducted under the PNP’s Focused Agenda, particularly its Enhanced Managing Police Operations (EMPO), which aims to strengthen coordination and enforcement against illegal activities affecting public order and economic security.
The PNP said it would continue coordinating with concerned government agencies and local authorities to monitor vulnerable entry points and prevent the distribution of smuggled and improperly documented goods.
