With the 2025 midterm elections fast approaching, the Philippine National Police (PNP) is intensifying its campaign to ensure a safe and peaceful voting season. Since the gun ban took effect in January, more than 2,000 firearms have been confiscated across the country.
From bustling Metro Manila to quieter provinces, police checkpoints and surprise operations have led to the seizure of various weapons — including handguns, rifles, and even explosives. According to the PNP, most of the confiscated guns were revolvers and pistols, many of which were unregistered or illegally carried.
PNP spokespersons emphasized that the gun ban is a critical measure to prevent violence during the election season. “We’re not just seizing weapons; we’re sending a message. We won’t tolerate any threat to public safety,” an official said.
So far, 134 suspects have been arrested through targeted buy-bust operations. Authorities also reported nearly 2,000 individuals apprehended in connection to violations of the gun ban and other law enforcement initiatives.
While only 11 election-related incidents have been officially validated, law enforcers are on high alert as the campaign season intensifies. The PNP assures the public that heightened visibility and strict monitoring will continue until the end of the election period.
The gun ban is set to remain in place until June, and violators face serious charges that could include imprisonment and disqualification from running for office.
